For the first 11 days of 2011, I’ll be sharing 11 smart things you should consider doing with your money this year. Each item should take no more than 2 hours, some considerably less.
Strategy #10: Be the squirrel.
Fluffly tails notwithstanding, squirrels have a habit of, well, squirreling things away. We should duplicate that habit. Squirrel away cash (in addition to your emergency fund). Squirrel away food. Squirrel away paper towels, toilet paper, Diet Coke and all the other things your family may consume on a large scale whenever you get a smokin’ deal.
Here are some tips:
Squirrel cash: Pick a store or two and every time you go to that store, put $20 cash in the back of your wallet. You can get $20 cash back when you use your debit card, or if you’re on the cash system, take out an extra $20 and squirrel it away. Keep that stockpile somewhere safe at home. It’s like the emergency fund you can hit up before you hit up the emergency fund.
Squirrel food: You can save tons of money by doing the bulk of your grocery shopping once a month rather than once a week. More on that here: http://amiestreater.com/once-a-month-household-planning/
Squirrel often-used items: You know that rush you get when you find a smokin’ hot deal on something your family uses a lot? When that time comes, STOCK UP.
When it comes to being smart with your money, don’t be a hoarder or go crazy, but grab a few nuts for tomorrow. In other words, be the squirrel. Be the squirrel. BE THE SQUIRREL.
